I think I’m all packed — this week-long trip to Terra Madre is carry on only, and I’m only bringing a few things that I’ll leave in the apartment. And we’re all anxious to see what’s in the drawers and cupboards, and if I’ll have electricity and hot water when I get there.
But in the meantime, I want to share a few really important and interesting things, that all happen to be connected.
Let’s start with the awesome, local, chickpea-based small business Mylk and Hummus, which was founded by John Cowan and joined by Christin Jameson — and I’m sure others; I know Christin from the Tower Grove Farmers Markets. They turn chickpeas into delicious hummus you can get fresh, and also canned latte drinks that are nice and creamy and completely vegan. And slick packaging.
I recently learned M&H hosts a podcast called Tangled Taproot, where they interview farmers growing their ingredients and other partners in the supply chain. I’ve only listened to one episode, but I look forward to hearing more about Bee Simple City Farm, Three Rivers Community Farm, Grand Army Farm, and other friends from the markets.
The podcast hit my radar via a social media post from Earthdance Organic Farm School, which has been around for about the same time Kakao has, and where I had the privilege of serving as president on the inaugural board of directors a few years ago.
Earthdance is phenomenal, the oldest certified organic farmland west of the Mississippi. Founder Molly Rockamann Korte (recently married, congratulations!) has nurtured and tended and grown Earthdance from a small patch of garden into a farmer school and pay-what-you-can farmstand and multi-restaurant partner and a regional agricultural force in the middle of Ferguson, Missouri.
So, while I’m traveling today — leaning on my great travel karma to help with my now delayed flight out of STL, and the planned tiny window of transfer time in Madrid — please check out Mylk and Hummus, and Tangled Taproot, and Earthdance, and learn about some really cool agricultural things happening in St. Louis. Because you’re going to hear more about them here and elsewhere.
I am so excited Brian, can’t wait for updates on your adventures.
